Reflection on a historical technique/style and compare to a contemporary technique/style within film
Many modern films use influences from German expressionism. This is ideal for portraying macabre subject matters seen mainly in horror films. Techniques such as low key lighting are used to convey mystery and distortion is also commonly used, employed through make-up, camera angles, costumes and strange backdrops.
Sunrise by Murnau in 1927, used enormous sets to create a fantasy world setting for its characters. The art direction also helps to tell the story, and mirrors the psychological tensions of the characters.
A modern day comparison would be Sin City (2005). This horror film, tells the physiological stories of several characters simultaneously. Similar to Sunrise, Sin City is set in a hyper-real fantasy world, using high contrast black and white and distortion to help set the mood.
