How can the sound and music assist the narrative in film?

Sound in film is an added element that helps the director depict the mood/ emotion of a scene. For example, the movie JAWS, there is a moment of little sound until the shark is about to strike and then tension music starts and increases until the shark has made its attack. This helps build the suspension within the scene.

Another Example is in the Lord of the Rings fellowship of the ring, the scene where Bilbo is giving his gifts to Frodo, the scene starts off with happy music which slowly turns sour and heightens in the climax where Bilbo lashes at Frodo for the ring. However the mood of the music does change back to the music whenever the hobbit’s think of home when Bilbo apologies for his actions.
